Life is hard. You can go through rough patches and over bumps, and sometimes it feels as though you're definitely worse for the wear, both physically and mentally. It's nice to have someone - someone more than a friend - there for you in those times...even if you don't think you want them or deserve them. But they're here, and they'll take care of you.

How to Play:
* This is a shipping meme for more tender, soft moments, but a little more serious than your usual "fluff." It's for people who've been broken down by their experience and those who wish to heal them.
* Comment with your character/your preferences. You may also want to specify whether your character will be the one "cared for" or the one doing the "caring" + pertinent information, but for most effectiveness, it's best to be open to both.
* Comment around.

1. Know You've Been Hurt By Someone Else: There are scars left on their heart from a past relationship or fling, and you have to let them know you're not the same way.
2. Can Tell By the Way You Carry Yourself: The person you have feelings for is one of those "cold stone wall" types who pushes people away. Can you get past that?
3. I've Asked About You: You've only heard bad things about this person, but you don't believe it.
4. What's a Life with No Fun: Lighten up a bit! You'd do anything to bring a smile to their face.
5. Please Don't Be So Ashamed: You have a big, BIG secret you don't want the other person to find out about, because surely they wouldn't want to even be near you if they did.

It makes absolute sense. They're looking for the three of them. If they travel together, if three people try to leave the country at the same time and same place on three counterfeit passports, the chances that they will be caught go up. So they need to travel separately. Need to be split up for a while, cross the ocean at different times, from different places.

Which means Felix is going up to Boston, to stay with one of Sherlock's associates. Sherlock has assured Joan that his associate, like her, is no fan of slavery, and will treat Felix well. She would never have agreed otherwise.

She's packing his things, slowly, silently, head down, back to him. It hurts, having to part. It won't be for long, but still. She knows this frightens him.

She's scared too.

Felix watches her pack, fitting everything carefully into the bag for him.
He doesn't want to leave. He doesn't want to be sent away. He's not crying, he's not begged - he's better now, the stitches have itched the past few days, but -

it hurts.
He doesn't want to leave her, what if she doesn't want him back?
Sherlock did say that the person he was to be housed with in Boston would treat him well, but he's still nervous. Will he have to wear his collar, will he have to go outside for errands and act normal?

Please don't leave. Stay with me.

She can almost feel his sadness, feel it as her own. He doesn't want to leave, she doesn't want him to leave. She needs to protect him, how can she protect him if he's far away? He's hers, he'll always be hers, she wants him with her, always.

But it's for the best. She knows it's for the best.

She swallows as she zips the bag shut, then stills her hands on top of it, curled loosely into fists. She closes her eyes, lowers her head, knowing he's there looking at her, but unable to turn around and see the pain on his face.

"I'm sorry," she says softly.

"We have to," he says in that quiet tone that happens when he is frightened. "Sherlock wants us both to be safe." He thinks he should know how it works but he can't remember, he knows she loves him and Sherlock does care about the both of them.

"I'm...sorry too."
Had he done something wrong? He can't shake the feeling that he's being sent away because he did something bad. Even if he knows Sherlock's told him it's not a punishment and they'll be good to him.

She turns slowly, lifts her head to meet his eyes. She swallows again at the fear and sadness she sees there.

"Felix..." she says, her voice laced with suppressed tears. She takes a small step toward him, hesitant, wanting desperately to touch him, hold him.

He sighs and lifts his head, looking a bit sad even if he's not crying yet.
He opens his arms a little, thinking his Mistress needs comfort.

Maybe they shouldn't touch because they'll have to separate, but Joan needs him.

She steps into his arms, lifts her arms to hold him, lays her head on his chest. The tears she's kept at bay start to well in her eyes, and she swallows and closes her eyes, one tear escaping to seep into his shirt.

Felix rests his cheek on her head. He doesn't cry aloud. It doesn't help to soothe his own fear about being sent away though. Is something bad going to happen to him? Is that why she's crying?
In addition to not wanting him to leave?
He really doesn't know how to comfort her other than patting her back a little.

"You know I don't want you to go, right? That we'd never be apart if it wasn't for the best?"

Her voice is tight with emotion held in check.

For the best. It's what's best for you. If you knew what was good for you...

"Yes." Rationally he knows that it is. It will keep the both of them from getting separated, it will keep Joan from getting sold off.

Which is a good thing.
Protect her.

He supposes even if this friend of Sherlock's does treat him poorly he won't complain.
Though he doesn't think Sherlock or Joan would intentionally send him somewhere he thought they would be unkind.

"It won't be long. We'll all be in London soon."

If everything goes as planned. But she won't let herself think about what might go wrong.

He nods, shivering a little. London. Home.
What is it going to be like. He doesn't picture it changing much.

London. He misses London.
He nods, rubbing her hair and then kissing the top of her head. "I'll be fine." Scared but fine.

She lifts her face and presses her lips to his, gentle and affectionate, wanting the contact, needing to express her love for him.

He kisses her back, gently, cupping her face in his palm. It's okay, Joan. We'll be okay. We have to be okay.

"I'll be fine," he says, when he pulls back and he's called to leave, having to take his pack with him, he does pause to kiss her forehead one last time before he has to go.

The next month is boring and tedious.
While it's true the people he stays with oppose the situation he was thrown into, there's also the curiosity, he supposes the fact his experiences have been different than some of the others.

Maybe the extremes of cruelty and kindness he's experienced.
